Governor Culver Issues Statement On China Earthquake; Last Week’s Cyclone
(DES MOINES)– Today Governor Chet Culver issued the following statement on the recent earthquake in China and last week’s cyclone in Myanmar:
“My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by recent tragedies: the cyclone in Myanmar (Burma) and the earthquake in China. I’m deeply saddened at news that the death toll continues to rise in both disasters. I am encouraged that the Myanmar Government is beginning to open its borders to needed relief flights. I urge the Myanmar Government in the strongest possible terms to allow a full, worldwide response to this devastation.”
“The people of the United States stand ready to help,” continued Governor Culver. The Governor is asking all Iowans wishing to donate to International Relief agencies such as the American Red Cross International Response Fund, to call 1-800-RED-CROSS or go to www.redcross.org.
