Statement From Governor Chet Culver On Federal Disaster Assistance Funding
DES MOINES – Today, Governor Chet Culver issued the following statement after learning that the Bush Administration had announced that it would pay for 90% of disaster costs for emergency services or what is referred to as Category B public assistance work.
Governor Culver had requested 100% federal funding for disaster public assistance Categories A (debris removal) and B (emergency services) for 60 days from the start of the disaster. Today, Governor Culver received word that the President had approved 90% federal funding for Category B. The President has yet to make a decision on Category A funding.
STATEMENT FROM GOVERNOR CULVER
“We appreciate the federal government’s assistance in helping Iowans recover from this year’s massive and historic natural disasters. However, we believe today’s announcement is only an interim step and only one piece of our request.”
“Due to the widespread damage and destruction seen across our state, I had requested 100 % funding for debris removal and emergency services. And as the assessments continue and we learn more about the magnitude of this disaster, it will take billions of dollars to help return life to normal for Iowans. If there ever was time we needed 100% reimbursement for emergency services and debris removal, this is it.”
“We are just beginning down the long road to recovery. However, since this disaster began, Iowans have shown their strength, resilience and determination. We are up to the fight, but it will take all available resources to rebuild our state and return life to normal for Iowans.”
